Pointing a pathway throughout Hampshire
Thursday, 19 June 2014
Hampshire County Council is introducing a new signposting system to make it easier for people to navigate and explore key destinations by foot. The initiative called 'Wayfinding', which is already popular in cities such as London and Bristol, uses totem style maps and finger posts to display main destination areas and tourist attractions.
The key aim of the Wayfinding project is to improve connectivity between the Railway stations and popular destinations so pedestrians to the area find places more easily. The signs will also showcase Hampshire's main tourist attractions encouraging tourists to visit all areas of the town centre therefore increasing footfall in these locations and boosting local business.
The project will provide improvements to signage to Fareham, Eastleigh, Winchester, Havant, Gosport and Totton. During the project 61 totem maps and 23 finger posts will all be installed by September 2014 Further improvements are also planned for Farnborough and Basingstoke in early 2015. Residents may have already seen the foundations which show a cover in the ground with the wording 'New Mapping Coming Soon.'
Councillor Seán Woodward, Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council commented: "The Wayfinding project will provide good quality, modern signage linking destinations and making it easier for people to find their way around the area. Visitors will be encouraged to explore the town centre and discover more of the attractions the local area has to offer therefore helping to boost the local economy by increasing footfall for businesses."
The Wayfinding project is funded by the Department for Transport's Local Sustainable Transport and Transport for South Hampshire Funds along with the Local Transport Plan. Over the next few years Hampshire will see a variety of infrastructure schemes in the city as part of the Local Sustainable Transport project - including new dedicated cycle routes - as well as useful information, products and services to help residents overcome the barriers to travelling sustainably.
