20mph limit in Sway
Response from Hampshire County Council, March 2013
Thank you for showing me around the lanes near your home and for explaining the issues faced by you, your neighbours and other road users. I am also grateful for the considerable effort you have put into gathering evidence in support of a 20mph speed limit. This response is my formal acknowledgement of the petition you submitted last November and outlines what we are doing. I had wanted to wait until we had met before responding.
As you will know, the County Council is undertaking a pilot scheme of 20mps speed limits elsewhere in Hampshire. These are expected to come into effect the summer, although it will probably be a year before we are in a position to know how effective they are. The purpose of the pilot scheme is to help us decide whether we should be using these speed limits on a wider basis.
Although the pilot schemes are still at an early stage, I would still like some initial investigations carried out in Sway to get a better idea of the situation here and help us decide what can be done. You and your neighbours have made a good case as to why a 20mph speed limit should be introduced in these lanes. What we need now is some evidence of current traffic speeds and I have therefore asked our officers to carry out speed surveys. They will report this information to me in mid-March, which I will then pass onto you with my further comments.
