Health check

Hampshire's NHS Health Check programme

  • Hampshire GPs offer free NHS health checks to their patients.
  • The health checks are designed to give you and your GP a clearer picture of your health, and help you take action to reduce your risk of the four most common but often preventable diseases: heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease.
  • As part of the Health Check GPs also give advice about sensible alcohol consumption and about the effects of dementia.

Preventing ill health and staying healthy

The NHS Health Check is for everyone in England aged between the ages of 40 and 74 who hasn't already been diagnosed with heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease.

If you are eligible for an NHS Health Check, you’ll be invited for a check once every five years.  The check consists of a few simple questions and straightforward health tests. Your risk of getting one of these diseases will be assessed, and you’ll be offered personalised advice and support to help you lower that risk.

If necessary you will be referred to your GP for further assessment and may be offered treatments or medicine that will help.

In the meantime, if you're worried about your health, contact your GP in the usual way.

How do I get an NHS Health Check?

If you're aged between 40 and 74 and haven't already been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, stroke or high blood pressure, you will receive a letter from your GP inviting you for your check at some time over the coming years. Invitations will be sent according to birth date and in batches to ensure all eligible people are invited once every five years.

Adults who have already been diagnosed with one of these conditions won't be invited for the check, and their health will continue to be managed as usual.

Why is the NHS Health Check important?

Early identification can prevent avoidable illness and death. An NHS Health Check will help to identify your risk of developing the four diseases that are the largest cause of death in the UK. Heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and kidney disease together affect more than four million people in the UK and are the reason for one-fifth of all hospital admissions.

Everyone is at some risk of developing these four diseases. But by identifying that risk early and taking steps to reduce it, you can improve your chance of maintaining or improving your health as you get older. Taking up the offer of a free NHS Health Check will improve the health and wellbeing of people in Hampshire and in the long term will reduce the cost on health and social care services.
