Adaptation, Classification and Evolution – Key Stage 2

A day’s programme does not necessarily include all the listed activities and can be adapted to suit individual needs and requirements. Normally we fit in three - five activities during your visit.

Activities Learning objective: the children should learn...
Bat and moth game (echolocation)
  • about how bats locate moths
Blindfold game
  • to evaluate the importance of communication for survival
Plants of the world
  • to identify how a variety of plants adapt to their environment.
Minibeast hunt
  • to observe and identify the variety of minibeasts found in different habitats using a range of equipment including sweep nets in the wildlife meadows (season and weather dependent) and to suggest reasons why particular minibeasts are found in certain micro habitats. The use of classification keys will be encouraged.
Bee game
  • through a drama activity, investigate how plants attract their pollinators.
Photosynthesis game
  • that plants and animals are interdependent.
Pond dipping
  • to use classification keys to identify specimens found in our dipping ponds and to observe the adaptations to an aquatic environment.
Estate agents
  • to consider the needs and requirements of animals when creating a home for them in the Gardens.
Leaf slides
  • to carefully observe the vein pattern in leaves and how that is related to the leaf shape etc.
Light meters
  • about the effect light has on the growth of plants.
Examining habitats with different soil types within the Gardens
  • that different plants grow in different soils – biodiversity.
Dinosaur survival game
  • about the different reasons for the extinction of dinosaurs by playing an interactive game
Plant Hunters trail
  • to learn more about the Plant Hunters by playing an interactive game.
Survival of the fittest game
  • about the factors affecting the success of a habitat by playing an interactive game.

Sessions times

  • 10am to 2.30pm
    with a break for a picnic lunch at 12pm in or near the Education Centre

Suggested Pre-visit activities

  • Discuss what plants need to grow well.

  • Research Carl Linnaeus, a pioneer of classification.

  • Find out about how Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace developed their ideas on evolution.
