Minibeasts and decay – Key Stage 1

A day’s programme does not necessarily include all the listed activities and can be adapted to suit individual needs and requirements. Normally we fit in five activities during your visit.

Activities Learning objective: the children should learn...
Minibeast hunt
  • to identify the variety of minibeasts found in different habitats.
Pond dipping
  • to identify the variety of aquatic life found in ponds.
Decay game
  • about the decomposition of plants.
Butterfly survival
  • about the life-cycle of a butterfly by playing an interactive game.
Un-nature trail
  • a greater understanding of camouflage whilst hunting for hidden objects in the natural environment.
Bee game
  • about the role of the bee in pollination.
Caterpillar trail
  • about the life-cycle of a butterfly through role play. N.B this is a blind fold game of trust.
Colour sticky strips
  • about the range of different coloured and textured materials found in the Gardens by creating an individual coloured strip.
Colour filters
  • to see the Gardens from different coloured viewpoints.
Bug’s eyes
  • Bug’s eyes – an alternative way to look at the Gardens.
Estate Agents
  • to consider the needs and requirements of animals when creating a home for them.


 

Sessions times

  • 10am to 2.30pm
    with a break for a picnic lunch at 12pm in or near the Education Centre

Suggested pre-visit activities

  • Look at a range of minibeasts and predict their habitat
  • Watch an apple decay over a fortnight
