ICT Services for Schools

Hampshire HPSN SWAN

Hampshire SWAN is the schools' new wide area network which will replace the existing HPSN service.

The Hampshire SWAN project will deliver schools with faster access to the Internet and allow them to take full advantage of graphics, multi-media applications, the digital curriculum and video-conferencing.

Synetrix Logo

Synetrix is supplying the Wide Area Network and connectivity back to the Internet whilst IT Services supply the Internet Service Applications, including firewall protection, filtering, and email.

Each secondary school will receive an 8Mbps service and each primary school a 2Mbps service. The network has been designed to allow for future expansion when appropriate. These bandwidths are provided over a network at 4 to 1 contention with other institutions, compared to 50 to 1 for commercial “broadband” providers.

The Hampshire SWAN service also includes a full set of ISP applications: firewalls, Internet filtering and central caching facilities. The Hampshire County Council corporate connection to the Internet has been substantially enhanced to meet this increased school demand.

EdICTNet

Classroom

EdICTNet is a scalable LAN solution based on Windows 2003 and Windows XP Pro.  EdICTNet provides a blueprint for new networks or for upgrading existing Windows NT4 networks.  It is designed to support  both administration and curriculum functions of schools of any size.

By installing EdICTNet, school  managers and teachers can concentrate on teaching and learning instead of worrying about the technology behind the scenes.  A school can start with a small number of workstations and add to this as appropriate.  EdICTNet is fully tested and scaled to support the SIMS SQL changes.

The installation of EdICTNet is offered by EdICT as a managed solution for Hampshire Schools and is designed to minimise the impact on staff.
