Bentworth is a scattered settlement some four miles North-West of Alton. It includes several hamlets within its bounds and buildings of interest such as Bentworth Hall, Gaston Grange and Burkham House. The church is of interest having the chancel arch and nave arcades dating from the twelfth century, illustrating well the transition from Norman to the Early English style. A thirteenth century font, a Jacobean chest and an altar from the time of Charles II are also worthy of note. In this church was christened George Wittes - poet and author. A fervent Parliamentarian, George Withers sold all his lands at Bentworth to raise a troop of horse for Cromwell.
