“Although the location of Steventon Rectory is "universally" known, its disappearance from the landscape has been long lamented. The Rectory was home to the Austen family for approximately 54 years but very little is known about the building or their time there.” D. Charlton - Archaeo Briton
In 2011 the Rectory Project (funded by Heritage Lottery Fund) brought together a team of mixed individuals and archaeological resources to discover the remains and put together the puzzle of the birth place and first home of Jane Austen. The project would also provide an insight into life in the house and Maureen Stiller, of the Jane Austen Society, said: "Experience went into writing her novels, so obviously the people she met and things she did must have fed into her work. This is where it all started”.
