Country Towns Initiative

Improving Hampshire’s Country Towns

Introduction

Hartley Wintney High Street improvements

Rural towns depend heavily on how attractive they are for shoppers and visitors. This programme aims to make them safer and better places. It is a partnership venture with local Councils and communities. A number of schemes have won national and local awards.

Emphasis on Quality

We lead by example. Materials and design stress appropriateness, quality and long life. Personal safety and local identity are high priorities. The following are typical works:

Overton - central square
  • planting, paving and lighting;
  • safety improvements for pedestrians;
  • removing street clutter;
  • new seating and green spaces;
  • street activities, markets, public art, etc.

Which towns do we target?

We consider town centres which:

  • are important locally;
  • have environmental problems:
Bridgefoot Path, Emsworth - award winning scheme
  • have funding identified for other works; and
  • where there is broad local support
