Improving towns & villages

Hampshire Villages initiative

Examples of past schemes

Wherwell Village

The road has been narrowed to stop parking.

The village war memorial is located in the heart of this historic village. Cars parking around all sides of the green were causing other vehicles to drive over the edge of the green and wearing away the edges.

The solution was to reduce the width of one section of road and to relocate the parking. To provide a new edge to the green using natural stone kerbs and oak bollards.

Road narrowed, new granite kerbs.

New granite kerbs and bollard help to protect the green

Bishopstoke Village “Beach”

A popular riverside location

The River Itchen passes through Bishopstoke in a series of channels. In Riverside, Church Road there is an area locally called the beach, which allows easy access to the rivers edge. This area acts as a ‘honey pot’ in the summer months attracting local people of all ages. The area was in need of improvement and the access was poor. New railings, steps, retaining walls and benches have been provided.

New steps and handrails have improved access.New benches and log retaining wall.

Easton Village

A very wide road junction was allowing vehicles to travel at excessive speeds through the heart of the village. Road priorities were changed and the road was slightly narrowed using granite setts and kerbs.

Natural stone setts used to narrow the roadRoad priorities amended in the village centre.
