What is Skills for Life?

Skills for Life is a national strategy aimed at improving adult skills in literacy and numeracy to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to develop skills to a level that helps them function effectively at work and in society. Skills for Life is a Hampshire County Council strategy. It gives staff the opportunity to brush up and develop their skills to be more effective in their jobs and improve standards. It is estimated that 11% of the local government workforce are below level 1 in literacy and 40% below level 1 in numeracy.

“Wider discussion went on in staff meetings and this led to gradual increases in standards as well as comprehension.”

What are the benefits for me?

Improving skills build confidence. Confidence and skills go hand in hand with increased flexibility and improved personal performance. Better skilled employees will be more willing and able to take on new and different jobs. Improved ability to understand instructions including important Health and Safety instructions enables people able to undertake a job competently and safely.

“This was a valuable by-product and I saw individuals' confidence and esteem improving weekly.”
