FAQs

Where are the wireless hotspots?

You can find the wireless hotspots on the previous tab, 'Find a hotspot'.

How do I connect?

See the information for Hantsnet users using Hantsnet devices, Hantsnet users using their own device and information for guest users.

Which wireless service should I use?

Use the Employee.hantsnet network if you are a Hantsnet user with a Hantsnet device

Use the Employee.selfservice network if you are a Hantsnet user with your own device

Use the Guest.internet network for guest access, if you you do not have a Hantsnet login

Can I use my own equipment?

Yes, as long as it has a browser and wireless capability (there may be some devices which are not compatible, unfortunately Help Desk is unable to offer support for these).

Troubleshooting

Question mark

What is the nature of the problem?

Here are some things you can try, but if you still have problems, see the support page.

Can’t connect at all

  • Is your wireless card is enabled? See information about wireless card on the 'before you start' page.

  • Check another application, either Hantsnet or the internet, to see if that works.

  • Have you changed your Hantsnet password recently? See change password page for more information.

  • Check your signal quality - -look at the wireless status icon in the bottom right of the desktop, if it says 'poor' or 'no signal' move nearer to the Hotspot.

  • Check to see if there is a network connection:

    - click Start
    - click Run
    - type cmd and press Enter
    - when the command prompt screen appears, type ping cache and press Enter.

Your screen should look like this:

Can connect but occasionally lose the connection

  • Check your signal quality: - look at the wireless status icon in the bottom right corner of the desktop, if it says “poor” or “no signal” move nearer to the Hotspot.

  • Is there anything coming between you and the Hotspot? Check for things like:

    - fire doors, filing cabinets and even some white boards contain a lot of metal, which can block wireless signals
    - microwave ovens which can disrupt wireless signals.

If in doubt try to move closer to the Hotspot .

  • Is your Laptop battery power low?
The power management on most new laptops will start to switch things like wireless cards off, when they only have about 50% power or less.
If in doubt, try to connect to mains power.

Tips

Light bulb
  • Disabling the wireless card when you’re not using it will help to save your battery.

  • Laptop power management often starts to shut down things like wireless cards when the laptop’s battery is below 50% - if you’re going to be sitting in one place for a long time, you should connect to mains power.

  • Wireless networks work best when you are close to the Hotspot, and there are no big physical obstacles between you and the Hotspot.
