The Railway collection

The Winchester Discovery Centre houses one of the largest collections of railway material in the country with over 11,000 items. Whether your interest lies in the history, the trains, the men or modelling, the collection will have something for you.

It includes books, pamphlets, timetables, CDs and videos/DVDs. The majority of the stock is available for loan and all titles can be found in the library catalogue.

There are also back runs of periodicals with an almost complete set of the Railway Magazine dating back to the first issue in 1897. Other current titles include Railway Modeller, Railway World and Modern Railways.

Subject enquiries can be undertaken on request for a fee of £3 which includes postage. We can help with some aspects of tracing your Railway ancestors, but we do not hold any original personnel documents.
