Local Studies at Andover Library

The Andover Local Studies section is housed in Andover Library as part of the  reference section. The collection is centred on the town of Andover and the surrounding area, including Whitchurch, and villages such as Quarley and Abbotts Ann.

Please note that a small selection of items on local history is kept on the open shelves with most of material listed kept in a private room so please ask staff.

There is a detailed guide to local studies material, with maps, photographs and sale particulars are listed in some detail.

The map collection covers the area of northern Test Valley and is arranged by Andover road names and village names. A detailed index is available. Our collection includes:

  • 25” to one mile of the villages surrounding Andover for the 1970s to 1990s
  • 6” to one mile for Andover and the surrounding area for 1910-1920, 1961, 1975-1980s

Andover Library also holds a large collection of photographs indexed by street and village with a more detailed list by individual photograph. Many of the photographs are on Hantsphere.

There is also a small collection of slides mostly of Andover and the surrounding area, including slides of Andover Library’s 21st birthday in 1993

We hold a separate collection of postcards indexed by place and street. Many are of Andover, Massachusetts.

Andover also holds a number of photograph albums kept in the store. They include:

IT facilities are available in the room, but not WiFi. Whiteboard available in room and digital projector upon request.
