Library services at prisons

Hampshire Library Service provides library services at two establishments run by HM Prison Service in Hampshire. Prison governors pay for the services of library staff managed by Hampshire Library Service

Each prison library is part of the County Library network with same functions and responsibilities as any other branch.

HMP Winchester
HMP Winchester is a local prison housing both convicted and remand prisoners.

Haslar Immigration Removal Centre
Haslar Immigration Removal Centre in Gosport is run by the Prison Service on behalf of the Immigration Department and holds 160 immigration detainees. The average length of stay is 5 months, varying from between a few days to 2 years. At any one time there are between 20 and 30 different nationalities represented.

The library stocks books in over 30 languages,music CDs, DVDs and audio books
