Special Collections in Hampshire Libraries
The Aviation Collection, housed at Farnborough Library consists of over 5000 books, pamphlets, directories and yearbooks, news cuttings files, videos and a small collection of photographs and postcards. Many of the books are available for loan.
Housed at Aldershot Library, this collection of over 18,000 includes Regimental and Divisional histories, extensive material on battles, campaigns and wars, biographies, genealogical sources, military theory, weapons, uniforms and medals. Many of the books are available for loan.
The Naval Collection at Gosport Discovery Centre covers the Royal Navy and all aspects of British naval history. A substantial amount of material reflects the strong links between Hampshire, particularly Gosport, and the Navy. Many of the books are available for loan.
The Railway Collection at Winchester Discovery includes some 11,000 books, pamphlets and timetables; many of which are unique. The majority of the stock is available for loan and all titles can be found in the library catalogue.
The Jane Austen collection is housed at Alton Library and covers the life and works of the author as well as linked to places and organisations.
Many of the books are available for loan.
In 2010 Hampshire Libraries held their own 'Air, Land and Sea' Book Awards. 113 titles were nominated by the public with an expert panel of judges then narrowing the field to 40 books for the voting round.
