Self-Service in Hampshire Libraries and Discovery Centres
Self-Service provides a quick and convenient way to issue and return books yourself leaving library staff available for customers who need more help.
Self-Service terminals are available in the following libraries
- Winchester Discovery Centre
- Basingstoke Discovery Centre
- Lyndhurst Library
- Chineham Library
- Eastleigh Library
- Chandler's Ford Library
- Waterlooville Library

Why offer self-service?
- It’s quick and easy to use, helping reduce queuing time
- The receipt lists all titles on loan and the date they are due for return
- Removal of counters makes more space for book display and browsing
- Without the barrier of a counter, staff are able to talk to customers more easily
- Reduces repetitive tasks for staff, such as stamping books, who will have more time for interesting and rewarding work including dealing with book and information enquiries, promoting and displaying stock and running activities
- Customers have more privacy whether borrowing books or paying charges
- Instructions are available in selected languages other than English
Will there be help to use self-service?
- Staff will be ready near the self-service to give assistance
- Staff will also be able to deal with enquiries from a Help Point
Can I return items at any library?
- Customers can continue to return items to any library or Discovery Centre
Can I make payments using self-service?
Customers can pay fines and hire charges except at Winchester Discovery Centre
Only coins are accepted at Lyndhurst Library
Coins and notes will be accepted at Chineham, Eastleigh, Chandler’s Ford, Waterlooville and Basingstoke
Currently debit or credit cards are not accepted
What about DVDs and CDs?
- Self-Service applies to CDs and DVDs although some DVDs and all Games must be collected from staff
