Job Seekers and Presentation Skills Classes

This is a selection of modules designed to cover skills required to get a job and also in the job.
Applying for jobs can be a demanding business, but these sessions will help you feel confident and well prepared.

Provided in the Winchester Discovery Centre.
Courses are free but booking is essential. Please visit the box office opposite our café to enrol, or phone 01962 873603.

Drop in advice is available on all the dates below, from 12noon to 1pm. These provide guidance on interview techniques, applying for jobs online and fine-tuning your CV.

Basic Computing

Thurs 28 Mar, 16 May & 13 Jun 9.30 – 11.30am

We aim to tailor this 2-hour session to meet your needs, such as using a computer for the first time, gaining confidence, getting started with email, attaching a CV, or typing one on a computer.

Write your CV

Thurs 7 Mar, 18 Apr, 23 May & 20 Jun 9.30am – 1pm

Learn why your CV is important, and what information to include. Find out how to put information in the correct order and to write a covering letter for online applications as well as postal applications. You can also save your work to a CD or memory stick to use after the course.

Finding a Job

Thurs 25 April 9.30 – 11.30am

This practical 2-hour session for job-hunters explores where you can look for jobs, and shows you how to use newspapers and websites, and register and apply for jobs online, including uploading your CV.

Confidence Building

Thurs 14 Mar, 2 May, 30 May & 27 Jun 9am – 1pm

This 5-hour course aims to build your own self knowledge by encouraging you to identify skills you have and be aware of strengths you may not even think you have! The course is interactive: you talk and swap opinions; you listen; you watch. You will also ‘score’ the tutor in a role play situation and think about communication styles, both verbal and non verbal. The course aims to be very informal and relaxed.

Handling Interviews

Thurs 17 Jan, 14 Feb, 21 Mar, 9 May & 6 Jun 9.30 – 11.30am

This 2-hour session covers how to prepare for an interview, helpful tips and techniques for overcoming nerves, and how to make the right impression and come over confidently in the interview itself.

You will need to book at the Discovery Centre and complete an enrolment form for all of the above.

Discovery Centre Job Club

For all age groups
Discovery Centre Job Club offers weekly employability drop-in sessions on CV’s, job search, confidence building sessions and interview advice. There are additional sessions for job seekers (see website).

Carroll Centre: Job Club

For all age groups
Carroll Centre Job Club offers weekly drop-in sessions providing assistance with job searching, CV’s, writing letters of application, careers advice, college and training providers. Community Café sells lunches/snacks. Internet access is available in school term times- from 12.15 pm to 2.15 pm. The Carroll Centre also offers local voluntary work experience opportunities.

Winchester Job Club offers help with CV, internet Job search, career advice, unemployment support and advice on benefits and where to get free debt counselling.

Winchester Job Club is held every Thursday- from 10am to 12 noon.

Friday afternoon youth drop-in

Careers information and networking for the under 25's


Drop-In offers assistance with reading documents, form filling, job searching, unemployment support, careers advice, apprenticeships,  voluntary work, CV’s, building records of achievement, training courses at local colleges/education providers, advice on benefits and where to get free debt counselling. Young adults can talk confidentially about issues that concern them. Refreshments are available.

National Careers Service

For all age groups
National Careers Service provides online careers advice and information about a wide range of employment and funding including job profiles, CV’s, covering letters, careers advice career planning.

The Princes Initiative for Mature Enterprise

Mature Adults over 50’s age group The Princes Initiative for Mature Enterprise- PRIME senior enterprise initiative- offers support services to mature unemployed people offering courses for the over 50’s and giving advice about setting up and running a small business.

Youth Options

For under 25’s
Youth Options run a range of courses for young people helping them build self confidence and enabling them to experience a range of challenging physical activities. Work experience places can be obtained and services such as the ‘National Citizen’s Service for Year 11 and school leavers’. Youth Options is a charity with significant success in supporting, developing and engaging children and young people.

Activities are based at various venues.

YMCA

For under 25’s
YMCA is a Christian charity which runs a range of clubs and courses for young people, helping them build self confidence and enabling them to experience a range of challenging physical activities. There are YMCA bases and hostels countrywide. There is a Refresh Youth Venue at St John’s House in Winchester. YMCA can offer voluntary work and advice for young people.

Under 25’s
Youthtube is a website for young people in Hampshire provided by Hampshire County Council. Youthtube offers section of information on; in my area: youth teams: health and relationships: jobs: money: learning: Youthtube provides careers advice and information about a wide range of employment, job profiles, CV writing, Covering letters, Career planning and apprenticeships.
