Enquiries, etiquette and protocol

This information is provided to assist those who are planning an event to which the Lord-Lieutenant has been (or is to be) invited, and who wish to know how to contact the Lord-Lieutenant or her staff, and some guidance on etiquette.

A woman appointed to the office is correctly addressed as Lord-Lieutenant

  • Written: Dame Mary Fagan DCVO JP, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire
  • Salutation: "Dear Lord-Lieutenant"
  • In a Speech: In the preamble the Lord-Lieutenant is referred to as "My Lord-Lieutenant"
  • Conversation: Dame Mary likes to be addressed as "Dame Mary" or "Lord-Lieutenant"

Issues relating to protocol and precedence can be clarified in consultation with the Lieutenancy Office.
