Ashley

Ashley lies four miles to the north of Romsey and one mile east of King's Somborne. It covers 742 hectares but has a population of less than 40. The Roman road from Winchester to Old Sarum crosses the Southern part of the parish; to the North of this is a large oblong earthwork, part of which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Eastern boundary of the parish is also the Western extent of West Wood, the Forestry Commission's plantation in Sparsholt parish.

The village of Ashley is situated in the North-East of the parish and is surrounded by the large fields typical of the fine arable land of the rolling chalk uplands. Some of the attractive cottages date from the C.15 and the parish church of St. Mary is of Norman foundation. Although the church is now redundant, it has recently been restored with the aid of the Redundant Churches Fund, and contains many interesting mediaeval features.
