Clanfield

Clanfield and Chalton Parishes were amalgamated in 1932, and were part of the Hundred of Finchdean at the time of the Domesday Survey.

The whole area is dominated by Windmill Hill and the windmill, recently restored, provides an outstanding focal point for the area.  A mill is known to have stood here as early as 1289.

Chalton is a small village with many ancient sites in its area and several interesting buildings. The Church of St. Michael is a thirteenth century structure and the registers include burials in woollen cloth from 1678-1746. Parts of the 'Red Lion' public house, opposite the church, are said to be over 500 years old.

Clanfield began as a small village but in the last 50 years has spread over a large area. The village has some old thatched cottages and a thatched village well-head. The Church of St. James was rebuilt in 1875 and contains two ancient mediaeval bells.
