Chandlers Ford and Hiltingbury
Chandlers Ford lies astride the old main route from Southampton to Winchester.
Stage coaches from Southampton to London passed through the area and over the bridge built over the Ford in the late 18th century. It's railway station was opened in 1847 serving the line from Eastleigh to Romsey and on to Salisbury and ran until 3rd May 1969. Train services returned to Chandler's Ford on Sunday 18 May 2003, 34 years after the last passengers used the station.
Chandlers Ford had a population of around 200 in the 1850's and a thriving brickworks allowed the village to grow through the 20th century to today's popular residential community.
The Hiltingbury area was mainly farmland and orchards (Hiltonbury Farm and others) until the post-war developments of the 1950's and 1960's.
Further information on attractions to discover in the area and other interesting villages to visit is available. For information on public services for Chandlers Ford and Hiltingbury please take a look at the Eastleigh local pages.
