The Challenge

There are 33 million cars in the UK, a rise of 7 million in ten years. Driving 230 miles a week, 12,000 miles a year, YOU produce 4.2 tonnes of C02 a year.

Indeed, the UK suffers Europe’s worst congestion, and traffic accounts for 20% of CO2 emissions. These staggering statistics and their impact on the economy, the environment and our quality of life spell out why there has to be a step change in thinking by individuals and employers alike when it comes to how, when and where we work.

Time to join the growing number of 'smarter working' people, who one or more days per week work from home or locally to increase their productivity, improve their well-being and off-set their carbon footprint.

Smarter working at a time and place of convenience for business, clients and staff benefit.

In the South East of England, research indicates that workers on particularly congested routes can add an extra third to their workday and spend around £3,500 financing their travelling costs.

Working from home or locally – even two days per week – can help reduce pressures on office space, ease peak time congestion, help the environment and contribute greatly to the well-being of staff. This is what we call "MATISSE Style Teleworking".

MATISSE which stands for Mobile and Teleworking Initiative for a Smarter South East is a partnership project led by Hampshire County Council and initiated by SEEDA (South East England Development Agency) . MATISSE is supported by amongst others, BT and Business Link (Please see the partners page to learn about the related activities of other members of the partnership) and set out to better understand the economic, social and environmental benefits of mobile and home working.

The project commenced with a six month pilot study in 2006 that tested and quantified these benefits as well as the anticipated productivity benefits of increased home or mobile teleworking. 100 volunteers from Hampshire County Council and fourteen Hampshire SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises took part in the trial. MATISSE Pilot Results Main Findings

  • Managers reported 87% of participants with increased  personal productivity

  • Participants saved up to £80 per week in commuting costs

  • Business mileage claims reduced for 40% of participants

  • The daily commute was a major source of stress

  • Personal well-being was much improved with 47.5% post-pilot strongly agreeing their work-life balance was good (pre-pilot the figure was 12%)

  • Of great significance in terms of retaining or recruting staff was the statistic that showed the 'very satisfied' in their job percentage rise from 18.8% to 57.1% post-pilot

Perhaps the most jaw-dropping statistics are those below based on the MATISSE pilot findings that showed 70% of participants travelled by car (in-line with other similar research). The analysis computed the SE region-wide savings should the current 380,000 home based workers double in line with Government aims over the next three to five years

  • In excess of £2.75 million pounds per month would be saved in fuel costs

  • Driving time would be reduced by around 4 million hours per month

  • 21 million miles of commute travel would be saved per month for each home based workday (NB 95% of MATISSE participants travelled at peak-times prior to the pilot)

  • CO2 emissions would be cut by 8750 tonnes per month levels

Copies of the MATISSE Pilot report from which the above statistics are drawn can be downloaded from the News page on the MATISSE website. Also available is the first release of the MATISSE Teleworking Implementation Toolkit aimed at helping organisations wanting to implement Teleworking across their own organisation
