Fire and gas safety: Keeping safe from smoke and carbon monoxide poisoning
Remember just as a smoke alarm doesn't detect carbon monoxide, your carbon monoxide alarm isn't a replacement for a standard smoke alarm - you'll need one of each.
Smoke alarms
Do you have:
- working smoke detectors fitted in the house

Arrange to:
- have them fitted in your home if you don't already have them
- test your alarm regularly using the test button to check that the batteries are working if you do have one fitted
You may be able to reduce some risks yourself or a friend, neighbour, relative or carer might help.
You could contact a local Home Improvement Agency who assist vulnerable homeowners and private sector tenants.
They will visit and give advice about problems with the condition of the home, offer a handy person service for small jobs around the home or offer advice on making the home more energy efficient.
