Jane Austen's baptism

Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 at Steventon Rectory near Basingstoke in Hampshire. Her father was the Vicar of Steventon and Jane was the seventh of eight children.

The Parish Register for Steventon records Jane's baptism on the day following her birth. The Register is in the Hampshire Record Office in Winchester, ref 71M82/PR2

"Jane Daughter of the Revd Mr George Austen Rector of this Parish, & Cassandra his wife was Privately Baptizd Decr 17th 1775 Rec'd into the Church April 5th 1776"

This register covers baptisms, 1737-1812; marriages, 1738-1753, and burials, 1738-1812, in the parish of Steventon. It includes several baptisms of Jane's brothers and sisters, as well as her own.

It also contains the burial of Ann, wife of Rev James Austen, eldest brother to Jane, on 11 May 1795.
