The Corporate Biodiversity Action Plan 2008 - 2011 highlights the importance of nature to our quality of life:
the natural world contributes to physical and mental health through providing relaxation, enjoyment and inspiration
the natural environment provides environmental services such as mitigating the effects of climate change and control of pollution
a healthy and stable environment is central to economic prosperity and the county's desirability as a place to live, work and visit.
The vital public services that the natural world provides make it imperative to conserve and enhance biodiversity now and for future generations. The County Council recognises this and has set out targets involving staff from 6 departments.
The Action Plan gives a round-up of highlights from the previous corporate plan for biodiversity (2005 - 2008), key changes in trends and policy, and desired outcomes for the next 3 years. Actions and targets for biodiversity relate to a diverse range of themes from planning and transportation to land management, climate change and health.
