The protection of the natural environment is an important and integral part of the planning system. Whilst the County Council no longer has a statutory duty, it does play an essential role in conserving and enhancing biodiversity through the planning process.
One of the headline targets in the Corporate Biodiversity Action Plan is that there will be no net loss of biodiversity (overall) through County Council planning decisions, within County Council development or service activity.
The Ecology Group plays an important role in achieving this target, through appropriate and timely guidance and advice to departments throughout the County Council.
Our aim is to ensure that development in Hampshire complies with all relevant legislation and government guidance, whilst adhering to the principles of best practice.
Thus, development should
be sensitive to the potential impacts on biodiversity
avoid damaging areas of nature conservation value (whether designated or not)
aim to minimise any unavoidable effects through appropriate mitigations
