Sustainable School Meals in Hampshire
HC3S is working with local suppliers to make school meals are sustainable as possible and here are a list of some of our achievements:
- Employment of 1,400 people in Hampshire
- Reduced deliveries means reduced mileage and a lower carbon footprint. Multi temp deliveries are made weekly or fortnightly.
- Use local suppliers, for example, free range eggs from the New Forest area, apple juice from Alresford, sausage from a Portsmouth butchers - see our 'Local Suppliers' page for more details.
- Pre-ordering systems operate in 86% of schools, reducing waste as children select their preferred meal each day
- Working with schools to help them achieve Sustainable School status
- Compostable plates were used for the Christmas disposables in 2009 and each year since, and the disposable wooden knives and forks used come from sustainable sources
- Any equipment replaced is done so with more energy efficient items, ie. fridges, freezers and ovens.
- Only use fish products that are approved as coming from well managed, sustainable fisheries.
- Recyle waste cooking oil.
- More kitchens have been installed in school to improve food and reduce transportation of meals.
