When you are approved as a foster carer you will be allocated a Family Placement Social Worker who will be there to offer you support, will undertake your regular supervision and will help you, over time, to develop your skills as a foster carer. You will be matched with a placement soon after approval.
The process starts with a phone call asking if you would like to consider a placement. The calls will be placed by a professional team - the Placement Commissioning team - who match carers and children based on the information available about each party. This professional team use their skills, experience and judgement to discuss the child and their needs with you, enabling you to decide whether the this is right move for you and your family.
Your placement worker will help you understand more about the detail of the process involved in matching a child to a foster family and it is also covered during the preparation training which is part of the assessment process.
