Get Hampshire Singing event case study

Winchester Discovery Centre, 21 July 2009

If you have the X factor, Silver Style, we want to hear from you!

A new and exciting phenomenon has taken over the Community Associations and Voluntary Groups in Hampshire thanks to willing participants joining their local over 55’s Sing-a-long Karaoke clubs! Over 2008/2009 singing groups were set up across the county through partnership working involving the Community Support Team (Hampshire County Council) , Older Peoples Wellbeing Team (Hampshire County Council) and a organisation called Sing For Your Life. These came about in a variety of formats, some were karaoke, others were sing a longs from song books, others involved tongue twisters and actions to songs, however all groups were enjoyed and well attended.

At the beginning of 2009 it was decided that since singing had become so popular across Hampshire thst the partnership working board should organise a big celebration event for all the new and well established groups and call it Get Hampshire Singing. This event was held at the Winchester Discovery Centre on the 21 July 2009 between 11am and 2:30pm and over 100 people attended, these were a mixture from Community Associations, Care Homes, Voluntary Groups and Individuals. Advertising was distributed by the Community Support Team, Arts Team, Older Peoples Wellbeing and Age Concern through various different formats. Posters were designed and disseminated accordingly with the aim to reach as many people as possible.

In addition to this being a free event, transport was provided across the county using voluntary sector transport groups, aswell as a free lunch and refreshments through out the day.  Sing for your life facilitated the event and provided song sheets and musical instruments in order to ensure there was lots of variety.  Music included “Catch a Falling Star”, “Delilah”, “My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean” and “My Way”.

The event was monitored by having three posters on the wall. One being a smiley face, second a not sure face and third a sad face. They were then asked to stick a sticker on the face which best described how they were feeling at the beginning of the event and then again at the end of the day. Three people had negative feelings towards the day however every other participant enjoyed the activities.

Some of the comments we received from participants are below:

“May we say a very big thank you for your “Get Hampshire Singing Event” , the food and all the company it was most enjoyable, our thanks go to the Hampshire County Council”

“Thank you so much for an enjoyable day, the musicians were excellent and the songs picked to sing couldn’t have been better. Everyone was so friendly, helpful and kind”

The Get Hampshire Singing Event has helped contribute to the Hampshire County Council’s Corporate priority of “Maximising Wellbeing” and the Older Peoples Well-Being Strategy County Priorities of:

A second event is planned for December 2009 with the aim of organising Get Hampshire Singing annually at different venues around the county.
