Improving outcomes for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups
Hampshire County Council has a key role in improving outcomes for local people. This priority is about:
- Ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to support themselves, be active in their community and have access to the services they need, while knowing that support is available if things go wrong.
- Protecting frontline services, with emphasis on the delivery of services to the most vulnerable, to reduce inequalities and make the best use of limited resources.
- Safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
- Giving people the support they need earlier, reducing the need for intensive, more expensive services later.
In 2011/12:
The County Council’s safeguarding work and services for children in care were judged by Ofsted inspectors to be good with outstanding capacity for improvement.
We launched a new internship programme for young people leaving the care of the Local Authority. To date, seven young people have had work experience at the County Council, while studying for an NVQ Level 2 qualification.
The numbers of adult social care users choosing the care they receive increased, with 73% getting self-directed support or personal budgets.
The 400th No Cold Calling Zone was introduced. This scheme aims to discourage rogue traders from approaching homes in search of business, and now covers 25,000 households.
60.8% of 16 year olds achieved five or more GCSEs grade A*-C, including English and maths – an all time high for Hampshire.
The Trading Standards service won a special recognition award for its work to protect vulnerable adults from scams. The Financial Abuse Safeguarding Unit has recouped nearly £400,000 on behalf of victims in three years.
