Hampshire Music Service

Change and stability: Hampshire Music Service in 2010-11

This year has been one of change and also one of stability. Hampshire County Council’s Music Service (HMS) has adapted to the cuts like many organisations, but has kept focused on serving the 39,000 Hampshire children who benefit from its services.

The new school year started with developing a different approach to how the Service delivers music by creating a range of after-school clubs, holiday clubs and music for adults

HMS has also carried on delivering amazing productions for Hampshire’s children: a few amongst many this year were

In harmony with the theme of change with stability, both the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra (HCYO) and the Winchester Area Schools’ Orchestras (WASO) are seeing a baton change. Tom Seligman is handing over to Carl Clausen who, after 19 years in charge of WASO, is vacating his podium in turn.

Tom is finishing his stint in style: he has already celebrated 40 years of HCYO with a very special concert at the Anvil in April where past and present musicians and conductors gave a roof-lifting performance to a packed audience. The HCYO follows that by opening the prestigious Winchester Festival 2011 with a spectacular rendition of Mahler’s Resurrection symphony, in collaboration with soloists Claire Rutter and Sarah Fryer, the Waynflete Singers and Wyvern Community Choir. Carl is signing off with an exciting end-of-year concert at the Anvil, with all WASO groups taking part – a truly emotional finale for everyone.

Add in to the mix over 110,000 hours of teaching, 72 county-wide ensembles and 12,000 instruments and this has been a busy and successful year for HMS.

Says Jill Larner, head of HMS, "In a year when HMS has been awarded the Diploma of Merit by The National Music Council (NMC) for music provision excellence, I am reassured with how our staff have adjusted to the changes this year, and yet still manage to provide a fantastic service to Hampshire’s children. I am sure that we will continue to do so, whatever lies ahead!”
