Hampshire County Council’s Music Service is pleased to announce that the Hampshire Double Reed Ensemble won the ‘Modern Music Cup’ for best ensemble at the 2012 Basingstoke Music & Arts Festival on Saturday 24 March with an honours mark of 91.
The group performed Tango by Matyas Seiber, Basse-Dance by Peter Warlock and the traditional song Bobby Shaftoe, the last two pieces arranged by ensemble director Sandra Woolsey. The adjudicator commented that, the Hampshire Double Reed Ensemble is an ‘exceptional’ group which I hope receives lots more chances to perform.”
Sandra Woolsey and Lucinda Willits, who jointly direct the group, are both woodwind teachers with Hampshire Music Service. They are delighted with the result saying, The ensemble has existed for about nine years but this is the first time that we have competed in the Basingstoke Music & Arts Festival. It has given all the players and parents a real boost and we look forward to entering the festival again. We would all very much like to thank the ‘Friends of the Hampshire County Youth Wind Band’ who helped to fund our entry to the festival. Their hard work in fund raising for the groups in the Hampshire County Youth Wind Band pyramid is very much appreciated.”
After welcoming a large number of very young, new players to the group last September the future of the group is set to develop from strength to strength. The Hampshire Double Reed Ensemble always welcome applications from enthusiastic young oboists and bassoonists from Hampshire of Grade 4 standard and above.
