World Music and the Primary Curriculum
World music workshops and residencies give a fresh approach to delivering Primary Curriculum. Children from YR upwards develop musical understanding and skills through ensemble playing and practical musical making. Workshops are differentiated according to the age and experience of the children, making every session an inclusive opportunity.
World music workshops give children the experience of playing together, promoting teamwork, as well as the personal skills of listening, following instructions and the development of bilateral co-ordination.
Particular curriculum features of world music workshops include:
Foundation Stage
Recognise and explore how sounds can be changed
Recognise repeated sounds and sound patterns
Be confident to try new activities, initiate ideas
Work as part of a group / class, taking turns and sharing fairly.
Key Stage 1
Duration: distinguish between rhythm and beat
Demonstrate accuracy and control of technique
Perform simple patterns and accompaniments keeping to a steady pulse
Follow hand and eye signals to direct and lead
Improve their own work
Rehearse and perform individually, in pairs, small groups and as a class
Explore and enjoy how sounds can be made, changed and used to create musical patterns
Key Stage 2
Duration: consolidate understanding of metre
Year 3 and 4
Maintain rhythmic and melodic ostinati as an accompaniment in 2, 3 and 4 metre
Make improvements to their work, whether individual, in pairs, in groups or as a whole class, commenting on the intended effect
Improvise longer repeated patterns, building a repertoire of patterns and sequences
Combine layers of sound with awareness of the combined effect
Year 5 and 6
Use instruments with confidence in the classroom and a wide range of untuned and tuned percussion with knowledge of correct technique
Maintain ostinati patterns and sequences in all metres
Maintain own part with awareness of how the different parts fit together
Improvise melodic and rhythmic phrases as part of a group performance
