Brand new Open DofE Centre
594kb opening in the New Forest!
The DofE Office will be moving early in April to Winchester…
Clarendon House
Monarch Way
Winchester
SO22 5PW
….. We will be joining offices with the rest of the Outdoor Education, PE & Sport Team. You will appreciate that this has come at an already busy time for us as the expedition season starting and many approvals arriving; presentation events in several of the local areas; together with a service that is constantly growing and the numbers of enrolments and approvals always increasing. All the DofE team are endeavouring to ensure that our move and service pressures do not impact too greatly upon the service we deliver to all our Centres and Leaders. However, we would really appreciate your understanding as we meet the challenges facing us for the next 6 weeks or so. We are planning to close the DofE office most of the w/c 4th April, therefore you may prefer to hold any non urgent correspondence enrolments/approvals and send them in to the new office from 11th April onwards, rather than risk something getting buried in a removal box!
It is important that approvals for expeditions occurring before 1st June are sent in to the Rookwood Office asap, to ensure they are processed prior to the move...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have already started the busy expedition season with numerous approval forms and Evolve approvals flooding into the office.
It is important that everyone respects the amount of time approvals need for processing, particularly when there are several queries involved. It would be much appreciated if you :
double checked your forms before you send them to prevent us needing to raise minor queries
continue to refer to your protocols and guidance notes
adhere to the required 8 weeks notice (any forms received after this period may not be processed and the trip will have to be postponed)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the office move - we need the time to process the applications and send out the delegate packs to eligible Leaders with enough time before the course.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the weekend of 30 April and 1 May they have 5 teams out and only 2 qualified expedition trainers available.
Please contact s.hindle@toynbee.hants.sch.uk

The Guild of Food Writers has launched its popular competitions to find the country’s best young cooks and food writers of 2011. Named CookIt! and WriteIt!, the two annual competitions attract hundreds of entries.
CookIt!
This year’s theme for CookIt! is ‘In for the Skill?’ and young cooks are being challenged to demonstrate their talents in the kitchen by creating a delicious and imaginative main meal and dessert. The dishes don’t have to be complicated but must be completely original and show creativity and skill in the kitchen.
CookIt! is supported by Gold Top milk, and the competition is open to children aged 10–14 years. Six finalists will be chosen to attend a cook-off in London in June 2011 at BBC Good Food magazine’s kitchens. The finalists efforts will be judged by an esteemed panel of judges, which will this year include Diana Henry, award winning food writer for The Sunday Telegraph.
All finalists will receive exciting prizes with the main winner going on a family holiday to a working Jersey dairy farm.
The closing date for entries is Thursday 28 April 2011.

The judges this year will be food writers Bee Wilson, Matthew Fort and Karen Barnes, editor of Delicious magazine, are looking for a real passion and understanding of the chosen subject.
The lucky winner will receive a laptop.
The closing date for entries is Friday 13 May 2011.

Hampshire County Council has purchased 15 All Terrain manual wheelchairs as part of the Aiming High for Disabled Children Programme.
These have been purchased to help increase accessibility to out of school activities in the outdoors/countryside.
We have had a number of these out and about at sites and so far feedback has indicated that they:
·Go over tree roots and mud with ease
·Travel well on sand
·Travel well over grass
·Travel easily over gravel
·Travel over pebbly beaches (can provide a bit of a work out when pushing up slopes!)
·Easy to store
·Low maintenance
·Easy to manoeuvre
·Easy to break down
·Easy to put together
·Kids see them as fun to use
·Work well on snow!
·They can be hosed down if they get mucky
·Are made from Marine Grade steel so can be used in and around fresh and salt water (and in the rain!).
Note that they are not 'self propelling' - someone will need to push the person in the chair. These can provide a much more user friendly solution than expecting people to use their standard wheelchairs on our sites. And it means that everyone can enjoy the ruggedness of the outdoors.
At the moment we have 6 available for sites to have for a trial period e.g. a month or more. This presents a number of opportunities:
·They can be loaned to customers to use on your site to increase accessibility.
·Staff can 'have a go' to see what it's like to move around your site in a wheelchair, exploring the overall physical accessibility.
If you would like to take up this offer please contact either Pat Jenner (pat.jenner@hants.gov.uk) to discuss and I will look to deliver them to you where possible. Happy to talk through and demo how they go together etc. The website above also provides loads of information and details.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have realised we have quite a low stock of 'DofE' photos to use on publications, website etc.
If anyone would like to forward any suitable photos, then please do!
We will credit where possible.

Please be reminded that the County DofE Office will be on the move this week from the Rookwood Centre, Eastleigh to Clarendon House, Winchester. Contact numbers will be confirmed soon, but in the meantime – email is the best way to contact the office. Phone numbers will be transferred soon and as you can imagine - we will not be at our desks the majority of this time, We will be attempting to update as much of our documentation as possible to the new contact details – please do let us know if we miss anything!
- with the Royal Visit we are a little behind, but we will be dedicating all our time we have this week to clear the majority of these.
- We are now no longer accepting provisional bookings. The final delegate list will be confirmed 8th April and confirmation packs will follow shortly after.

Enjoy making new friends? Enjoy doing what YOU want to do? Then the Hampshire DofE Youth Forum sounds like just the thing for you…
We are a group of young DofE participants from across Hampshire, from starting Bronze to finishing Gold.
What don’t we do is more the question? We do pretty much anything we can, and if we’re not doing something, then we will push it so we can! We have been involved in eDofE Feedback, giving presentations at presentation evenings, helping run the Gold Presentation evening in Hampshire, putting on a BBQ for DofE Participants, help run leader expedition training and of course the general running of the forum and much more… Not mentioning meeting the ACTUAL Duke of Edinburgh.
Why not? You can meet new people, explore things you might never of before.. for example, have you ever thought of meeting the Duke? I bet not. Have you ever thought of changing a leaders expedition training course? I think not.
You will have a once in a life time experience with us, we guarantee it, just go on our website and read a blog post from a member that has just moved onto to University.
Simples, all we want is your enthusiasm and ideas.
We are currently in desperate need of a new writer, they would be in-charge of writing blog posts, writing articles for newsletters across Hampshire, and proof reading general documents.
Simples, just send us an email saying you are interested to Youth.Forum@dofe.hants.gov.uk or via our Twitter or our Facebook page.
Where are our meetings? All over Hampshire, if you have a place we can host it for free, we will come to you.
Can I get my travel expenses back? Bring us a receipt and get your money back.
When are the meetings? We have one every month, alternating between a Monday and Wednesday. Do I have to attend them all? It would be nice, but when you can’t - just pop us an email and it will be fine!(:
Many thanks,
Jack Tracy

Please can all users be aware of the refuelling procedure regarding hire vehicles from Hampshire Transport Management.
With current high fuel prices, it is important that all users replace the fuel they have used. Failure to do this will result in the hire company refuelling at extortionate forecourt prices.
Please take note of the hire fuel recording sheet which is sent to all customers for completion upon confirmation of their order. Hampshire Transport Management would like to encourage the use of this as it will help to reduce and keep costs to yourselves to a minimum.
For more information please visit http://www3.hants.gov.uk/htm/htm-hire.htm or email htm.hire@hants.gov.uk

Straight from the South-East Regional office:
We will be launching a major update to the eDofE system for participants, Leaders and centre Co-ordinators on 19th May 2011.
As there is a significant migration of information from the current system to new eDofE, eDofE will be unavailable from 16th to 18th May to allow this to happen. The new eDofE will be launched on the 19th May.
Please do everything you can to action any outstanding alerts or approvals before the 16th May. We will be doing some house keeping prior to this and will delete old alerts prior to the 1st April on 13th May.
With feedback from users since the launch in 2009, we have vastly improved the user experience. The new eDofE will allow participants to quickly upload work and Leaders to check and approve it.
Main upgrades include:
1) New fresh look and feel
2) Evidence screen – work can be quickly uploaded and viewed
3) Messaging – quickly identifies users within your group or centre.
4) Permits editing/correcting/deleting work at any point before the level is approved by the OA
5) Leaders – alerts system now permits a quick overview of all submitted work
6) Leaders – participant overview allows you to see participant progress on their sections
7) Leaders – can now upload evidence and record expeditions on behalf of participants
8) New sub group functionality created
9) Easy to add and publish news stories
10) ‘Help’ function ensures participants query will be sent to their primary Leader and Leader/Centre Co-ordinator queries will be sent to their primary Operating Authority DofE Manager.
This upgrade will only cover participants, Leaders and DofE centre Coordinators. Operating Authority roles will be upgraded later in the year so
eDofE Managers and assistants will continue to work with the current design. They will see an upgrade to their interface in the autumn.
If you have any questions about this upgrade project, please contact your Leader or Operating Authority who have more detailed information.
