Examples of Good Practice
Many Hampshire services and events have been initiated by us to improve equality. Here are just a few examples.
Age

Our Older person’s well being Team has, for the past eight years, supported older people to learn how to use the internet via Silver Surfers taster sessions.

We asked young people in Hampshire for their views and used that information to create a website called Youth Tube
Disability

The library service run reading groups for visually impaired people.

Our Access Team help to improve access for disabled people to all our public buildings and advise schools.

People who have a learning disability can learn about consumer rights and how to manage a budget through a DVD (Making Money Matter) which has been produced by our Trading Standards Department.
Gender

As one of the largest employers in Hampshire we provide flexible working arrangements for our staff and are a model for other employers in the county.

The County Council has taken steps to ensure equality of opportunity in employment through positive action initiatives.

We recognise that one element of gender equality is enabling women and men to have the right to maternity/ paternity leave and to be able to work flexibly to assist with caring responsibilities.

We provide information on support groups for transgender people.

In February 2010 we continued to raise awareness of the needs of the Lesbian, Gay Bi-Sexual (LGB) community by holding a seminar to consider the issues.

Supporting Communities

Our Community Development Officers help provide support for people from BME communities and are based in the Adult Services department
