Population pyramids in the video illustrate the age and sex structure of Hampshire County for selected years from 1851 to 2011. The pyramids show the population ageing over time as more people occupy the older age groups. These changes are caused by a move towards low fertility and improvements in mortality rates. The impacts of two World Wars can be seen in the pyramids. Also visible are the children born in the post-Second World War and 1960’s baby booms moving through the age structure over time. The excess proportion of the population occupied by young adult males in some years is explained by Hampshire’s military towns, such as Aldershot and Gosport.
