The River Hamble Harbour Authority
Crown Estate policy on privately owned pontoons, River Hamble
For a number of years there has been in place a restriction on the installation of new privately owned mid stream pontoons on the River Hamble.
Following several recent requests from berth holders The Crown Estate in consultation with the Hamble Harbour Office has reconsidered this position and is willing to consider requests for new pontoons although it reserves its position absolutely to refuse such a request.
- Consent will be granted by way of a formal licence, which will, inter alia, require that the owner must ensure that the pontoon is fully insured, regularly inspected and properly maintained to the Landlord’s satisfaction. The owner will be required to remove the pontoon at the owner’s own expense if requested by the Landlord (for example, in the event of access being required to a mooring pile(s) for maintenance purposes).
- All other necessary consents (for example from the River Hamble Harbour Authority) will need to be obtained before the pontoon is installed.
- For the present, apart from a one-off fee of £150 + VAT for administering the initial consent, The Crown Estate does not propose levying an annual charge. The Crown Estate reserves its position in this respect although there is currently no intention to introduce an annual charge.
We trust that this helps to clarify the present situation but if you have any further queries then please do not hesitate to contact the Harbour Office tel 01489-576387 or Chesterton Humberts, agents for The Crown Estate tel 02380 634744.
