Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The area offers many opportunities within the Award Scheme at all levels. The Brecon Beacons are designated as ‘wild country’ for Gold Award Expeditions and exploration. The Hampshire & Cass Foundation Mountain Centre Director can advise group leaders on routes and campsites in the area. The centre can also provide a residential base for training activities.

A number of adult courses are held throughout the year at Hampshire & Cass Foundation Mountain Centre for National Governing Body Award training and assessment. Please contact Hampshire & Cass Foundation Mountain Centre Director for details.

Adult Training Courses

Future ML & WGL Course dates 2014:
These courses are regularly delivered during the Easter and October half terms every year. The next courses over Easter are shown in the details below. Following courses will be delivered during 25 to 31 October.

Mountain Training UK (formerly MLTUK) qualifications are nationally recognised and hold a very good reputation. They are a necessary prerequisite for those wishing to lead groups of young people in the hills.

Prerequisites

The mountains of the UK are remote, technical and exposed to harsh and unpredictable weather. This makes them hazardous places for novice walkers, and the ML is designed to help responsible leaders who wish to operate in mountainous terrain in summer conditions.

The ML course helps to develop your group management skills, your ability to navigate in all conditions and to deal with mountain hazards (including steep ground).

The course includes one night of lightweight high level camping.
