Works to infill scour hole - City Bridge Winchester

Friday, 04 October 2013

Hampshire County Council is planning to carry out essential preventative maintenance works to infill a scour hole close to City Bridge, Winchester.

The bridge and river bed are inspected on a two year cycle to ensure the integrity of the structure and its foundations.

Bridge scour is the removal of sediment such as sand and rocks from the river bed around bridge foundations caused by swiftly moving water.

Cllr Seán Woodward Executive Member for Economy, Environment and Transport, said: "We've been monitoring a developing scour hole immediately to the upstream of City Bridge. The scour hole does not represent a threat to the structure at present, but we are going to take preventative action by infilling part of the scour hole adjacent to the bridge. To enable us to carry out these works road closures will be required but to keep disruption to a minimum we are planning to carry out the work during the early hours of a Sunday morning later in the autumn."

The scheme will involve the closure of Bridge/High Street between the junction with Water Lane and the junction with Colebrook Street. The works will be carried out during the early morning of a Sunday from 0400 to 0900hrs. No date has been set for the works but it is likely to be in November as the reduced water flows of late autumn make this the optimum time for placing the rock material.

A diversion route will be in place for vehicular traffic and a safe route over the bridge for pedestrians will be maintained at all times. Lifting plant and vehicles are sufficiently mobile to enable the passage of emergency vehicles through the works area with a minimum delay.

Notices will be placed on the bridge approaches to give advance notice to the travelling public of the works and further information will be sent to local businesses and residents. The budget for scheme, including traffic management for the diversion is £15,000.
