StreetSense gets on board to spread the road safety message

Bus operators, rail companies and the Police, have signed up to support Hampshire County Council's StreetSense campaign, in a joint initiative to improve road safety awareness among 11 to 16 year olds in Hampshire.
The transport organisations will help to spread the word by displaying specially designed posters and artwork on their buses and trains, and at stations, across Hampshire. For example:
- Stagecoach South providing panels for displaying StreetSense posters on their fleet of 250 buses;
- South West Trains providing poster advertising opportunities at train stations in the county.
Hampshire Constabulary has also produced a radio advert which is being broadcast on Capital FM until the end of November.
A road safety campaign that aims to reduce the number of accidents involving young people aged 11 to 16 years, 'StreetSense', was introduced following an initial study that identified sites where there had been injury accidents involving this age group. The majority of these were near to schools, with 2,534 child casualties in Hampshire in the five years to June 2010, of which 674 were young people aged 16.
By using a range of measures including educational materials for use in schools and talks from road safety experts, the new campaign aims to remind both teenagers and pre-teens about keeping safe as they travel on foot or by bike, particularly to and from school. With the help of the bus and train operators, young people will now see these important messages when travelling on buses, on trains and at Hampshire rail stations.
Councillor Mel Kendal, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Environment and Transport, commented: It is good news that the Police as well as bus and train operators are putting their weight behind this important campaign. We have drawn on the experience gained in the local Travel Safe campaign, developed by the Lymington to Brockenhurst Community Rail Partnership to extend our StreetSense campaign to include rail and bus operators. By taking a joint approach, we can work together in a bid to drive down the number of casualties among young people in this age group".
Throughout November, the StreetSense campaign messages will be broadcast on Capital FM and seen on Facebook, as well as on bus sides and backs.
