Three times a charm for County Council designers

14 November 2012

Hampshire County Council's in-house Property Services team has scooped a third award for their design of Forest Park School in Totton.  At the Solent Design Awards held on 13 November 2012, the school for children with complex learning difficulties was celebrated as Overall Winner of the Quality Places Award.

The Awards recognise schemes and new developments that enhance the quality of life in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and the Solent area; creating special and quality places, that lift communities and create richer experiences, whether they are iconic buildings or the spaces in between them, that shape people's daily lives.

Commenting on the design of Forest Park Special School, the judges said the scheme 'displayed terrific resolution of a complicated brief', and 'carefully avoided an institutional feeling where architecture and landscaping cohere well to create a wonderful and uplifting school environment'.

The school has already received national recognition elsewhere this year, with a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Downland Award. It was also named runner-up in the SCALA Civic Building of the Year Awards 2012, as an uplifting and nurturing environment for children with complex needs.

Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Ken Thornber, added:

"For our in-house design team to pick up a third award for Forest Park Special School, is a wonderful achievement and testimony to the team's commitment to providing high quality and inspirational surroundings for the people of Hampshire.

"Not only do these awards reflect the calibre of architects we have within a department with a national reputation for excellent designs, but they also instil a huge sense of pride in the people who are using these fantastic, award-winning buildings."
