Gosport groups have their say

Local Gosport community groups pitched for votes from more than 150 local residents at Thorngate Halls on Saturday 17 November 2012 to try to win funding.
A record number of 17 local community groups took part in the YOUdecide Decision Day and competed for a share of the £12,000 funding on offer. The groups, who work with all parts of the Gosport community, had three minutes each to tell the audience of Gosport residents how much funding they were asking for and why they should get it. The residents then voted for the groups they wanted to support.
The groups who made the most convincing cases and received the most votes were:
- 6th Gosport Scout Group New Home,
- Momentum and Active8 Youth Clubs,
- Moving on Project,
- Aspiring Autism,
- Forest School Leader,
- Gosport Street Pastors,
- Fortonfest 2013.
They will receive their share of the £12,000 grant from The Community Safety Partnership through the YOUdecide programme, which in turn is funded by Hampshire County Council's new 'Have Your Say' scheme. The Have Your Say scheme provides funding for local projects which have been chosen and then voted for by local people and will run until 31 March 2013, or until all the £200,000 grant has been used.
Keith Mans, Hampshire County Councillor and Executive Member for Communities and International Relations, congratulated the winners saying:
"I'm delighted that so many people have packed the room today to take part. Have Your Say is an important way for people in Hampshire to have a direct say in how their communities are run. It gives local people a real voice in how money is spent in their area and encourages small scale grass roots community projects. It's a great way to improve their local environment and strengthen their community and make Gosport a safer, better place to live in."
Applications to organise and run small scale community participatory budget events are welcomed from local organisations including district/borough councils, town or parish councils, council for voluntary service, community groups, community safety or other relevant partnerships. These organisations must have the ability to operate the scheme locally, and potentially link this with other resources for the community to make decisions about the funding of local projects.
