Work to widen road in Winchester Hill, Romsey

A £750,000 scheme to widen the road in Winchester Hill, Romsey to three lanes, improve highway drainage and provide a signalised junction started on Monday 7 January and will last for up to 16 weeks.
Signed road diversions will be in place from 14 January while the work is carried out at Winchester Hill and Cupernham Lane. The diversion route is from Winchester Hill into Braishfield Road, Sandy Lane into Cupernham Lane and Fishlake Meadows and onto the A3057. There will be an alternative route for the bus operators.
The scheme involves widening Winchester Hill to three lanes from the hospital entrance at the top of the hill to the junction with Cupernham Lane. A two metre wide footway will be provided on the eastern side and storage drainage pipework will be used at the junction on Winchester Hill. The work also includes a new signalised junction and uncontrolled crossing on Winchester Hill, near the junction.
The works are necessary as part of the Abbottswood Major Development Area (MDA) planning condition. The operation of the two way temporary traffic signals will be 24 hours a day and traffic management will be in place throughout the duration of the works and checked on a daily basis.
Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Environment and Transport, Councillor Mel Kendal said: "This scheme will help to manage the impact of additional traffic from the Abbottswood development but should also benefit road users in Romsey generally as they will gain an extra lane and signalised junctions to improve the flow of traffic through this busy area.
"We recognise that any roadworks can be frustrating for motorists and others, but the road diversions will be clearly signed and managed and we would ask people to be patient while the work is underway. The long term improvements should be worth any temporary inconvenience during the construction."
The works are being funded by the Abbottswood Consortium.
