Changes proposed for London Road, Basingstoke

Plans for a £360,000 road improvement scheme have been agreed by Hampshire County Council, for London Road in Basingstoke. The improvements are aimed at helping to make road crossing safer and encouraging lower traffic speeds.
In developing the scheme design, Costello Technology College, local residents and the local members have been consulted by the County Council. The proposed scheme includes building three new pedestrian crossing points with refuge islands along London Road, with one to replace the existing priority build-out at the eastern end of the road near the junction with the Ringway. This will mean there are four in total on London Road.
At the junction with Eastrop Lane, the existing section of road that was previously made narrower will be reconstructed to its original width with an additional pedestrian refuge island to assist crossing. Changes will also be made to the junction with Crossborough Hill to make it easier for the traffic affected by the new pedestrian refuge on London Road to turn out of the junction and help to improve safety for pedestrians.
Councillor Kendal, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Environment and Transport, said: "This scheme has been designed to encourage motorists to drive with due regard for pedestrians along this road. I hope that when the scheme has been completed, pedestrians, particularly those attending Costello Technology College, will make good use of the refuge islands to help keep themselves safe when crossing the road.
Work is expected to start at Easter, during the school holidays to keep disruption to a minimum. Although the scheme will be funded largely by developer contributions, and the balance paid for with a grant from central Government. Prior to construction of the scheme, some work will need to be done to divert utility services (gas, electric and mains water).
