County Council invests over £6million in extra primary school places in Eastleigh

Wednesday, 26 June 2013

Building design proposals for two school expansions in Eastleigh have been given the go ahead, as part of £6.6million investment plans by Hampshire County Council to increase primary school places in the area.

Designs for the £5.6million expansion of Crescent Primary School, off Toynbee Road were agreed by County Council Leader, Councillor Roy Perry at his Decision Day (25 June). Subject to planning permission, the school will be expanded to create a three form entry school to provide an extra 210 places and cater for a total of 630 pupils. Work is expected to start during December this year and finish in October 2014.

The project will see nine new classrooms created, which includes the replacement of two temporary ones. Improvements and remodelling will take place to the existing teaching spaces and a new main hall, entrance, reception, toilets, and staff accommodation created. Children will also be able to enjoy improved play areas and the habitat area replaced and relocated.

Councillor Perry also approved £950,000 plans to create an additional 105 places at Nightingale Primary School, off Nightingale Avenue, so that it can accommodate a total of 420 pupils. Subject to planning permission, it is being proposed that two new reception classrooms are built including toilet facilities and play area. A new entrance, reception and main office will be provided and a new classroom conversion. Work is scheduled to start in December and finish during August 2014.

Councillor Perry, said: "The expansion of these two schools in Eastleigh represents significant investment by the County Council, and reflects our commitment to providing children in the area with the best possible start in life.

"As is the case nationally, Hampshire is experiencing an increase in demand for primary school places and this is down to a number of factors including; a rising number of births, housing development and increasing numbers of families moving into the county. Some parts of Hampshire are more affected than others, and these latest schemes in Eastleigh form part of our wider plans to create additional school places in a large number of communities across the county including Farnborough, Fleet, Bramley, Overton, Winchester, Basingstoke, Emsworth and Andover."
