Eclipse BRT shortlisted for a prestigious National Transport Award

Monday, 12 August 2013

The Eclipse Bus Rapid Transit, run by Hampshire County Council and First Hampshire & Dorset, has made the shortlist for a National Transport Award in the Transport Team/Partnership of the Year category.

Eclipse BRT delivers a viable public transport alternative for people living and working in one of South Hampshire's most congested areas. It comprises 3.4km of dedicated busway, running along a disused public railway line, from Redlands Lane in Fareham to Tichborne Way in Gosport.

To build the scheme Hampshire County Council bid for and won £20 million funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to construct a bus-only route. First now operates 14 high-specification buses on the route, providing a fast, frequent and reliable service between Gosport and Fareham.

The successful delivery of Eclipse BRT has only been possible as a result of the close working relationships that First and Hampshire County Council have developed from design to delivery.

The scheme is proving extremely popular with the Eclipse E1 and E2 services now carrying 65 per cent more passengers than the services they directly replaced, the 82 and 86. The overall route carried approximately 1.5 million passengers in its first year and encouraged more people to use the bus instead of their car.

Councillor Sean Woodward, Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, said: "I am delighted we have been nominated for this award as it recognises the hard work and dedication that has made the Eclipse BRT successful. The partnership working between ourselves and First has been exemplary and will, I am sure, continue well into the future."

Marc Reddy, Managing Director, First Hampshire, Dorset & Berkshire said: "It is great news for this highly successful and popular bus service to be short-listed for a National Transport Award. It really demonstrates the commitment shown by the teams delivering the service and emphasises how good partnership working with Hampshire County Council delivers excellent transport provision."

The National Transport Awards are supported by the Department for Transport and Passenger Focus. Winners will be announced on 17th October 2013.

Hampshire County Council was awarded Transport County of the Year at the 2012 Awards.
