Hampshire has Superfast Broadband Programme mapped

Wednesday, 09 October 2013

Hampshire County Council has published a map showing the areas in Hampshire that will benefit from superfast broadband coverage in a countywide scheme to provide a high speed network to more than 57,000 local businesses and households.

This map shows the extent of planned coverage in the first wave of the superfast broadband project which will reach 90% of premises by the end of 2015 in eight phases. Planning is currently underway for the second wave of the project to reach at least 95% of Hampshire by 2017.

The first premises will be able to sign up to superfast services in January 2014. Although details of Phase One are now confirmed, the fine detail of the overall coverage area will evolve during the lifetime of the project and so the information provided at this stage is a forecast rather than a firm commitment. Detailed maps for each phase will be published as soon as that information is available, and the County Council will also update the Hampshire Superfast Broadband map as these details are confirmed.

County Council Leader, Councillor Roy Perry, said: "Access to broadband is a vital component of infrastructure in today's world - for businesses, for education, for residents. In order for Hampshire to remain competitive in economic terms, to ensure quality of learning is available to all students, we want to make sure as many people as possible can benefit from faster internet connection speeds.

"I'd like to thank the 20,000 residents who have signed up in support of faster broadband which has demonstrated demand. The more names and email addresses we have the easier it will be for us to make the case to extend superfast broadband coverage."

The map shows the extent of superfast broadband coverage once the initial contract has been completed in 2015 with 90% of premises across the county having access to superfast broadband - the grey areas covered by commercial investment and the green areas the projected areas covered by the Hampshire Superfast Broadband Programme. The remaining area (in yellow) shows the area covering the final 10% of premises. Hampshire County Council is actively working on plans to bring superfast broadband to premises in this area with a target to go beyond 95% of premises by the end of 2017.

The high speed infrastructure network extended to 90 per cent of premises in Hampshire will be capable of delivering speeds over 24Mbps in line with the national framework, agreed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Hampshire County Council, together with district and borough partners, has already invested £5million in the project and was awarded the same figure from Broadband Delivery UK. BT is contributing an additional £3.8million towards the cost of installing the new fibre infrastructure bringing the total investment in the project to just over £13.8million. The money will stimulate investment and finance the costs of the upgrade to the network infrastructure.
