Hampshire pays tribute to the county's young carers

Thursday, 07 November 2013

A number of young carers from across Hampshire have been treated to a special weekend at Calshot Activities Centre as part of the Hampshire County Council Chairman's annual theme for 2013/14.

The theme this year by Council Chairman, Councillor Ken Thornber is 'Young Carers', and to show the Council's appreciation for their important role in Hampshire communities, 29 young people were recently offered a free weekend of activities, fun and time out at Calshot.

Councillor Thornber explained: "Many young carers are silently juggling school or college with the commitments of looking after an elderly or disabled member of their family, and for some it can be a full time job that is both physically and mentally demanding.

"To be able to offer these remarkable young people a short break from their caring responsibilities, a chance to relax and enjoy themselves and form friendships with other young people their own age, has been very worthwhile."

During their action-packed weekend (25-27 October), the group, aged between 11 and 17 had the opportunity to enjoy and experience a range of activities on offer including climbing, skiing, and archery. The Hampshire Music Service also arranged for them to join a session on 'Samba' and 'Taiko' drums, with a performance delivered for special guest Councillor Thornber.

2011 census figures show there are over 7,600 young carers in Hampshire, many of whom may feel alone or isolated and unable to talk to anyone about their situation. Hampshire County Council provides a range of advice and support for young carers.
