Emsworth Primary School and Petersgate Infant School (Clanfield) are set to expand to provide additional primary school places for their communities after Hampshire County Council agreed an investment of nearly £1.5 million.
A two classroom extension will be constructed at Emsworth Primary School, that will increase the number of primary school places to 315 (an increase in capacity of 105 places). At Petersgate Infant School, one classroom is to be added, creating a further 30 places.
Commenting on the decision to approve plans to invest in the expansion of the two schools, Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Roy Perry commented: "Over the next few years, across the county, we are providing 8000 additional primary school places in areas of high demand with a planned investment of £165 million. Our objective is to deliver quality education locally, that is to say, near to where children live and where parents want them to go to school. The investment we are making to transform and expand existing schools and in building new schools will enable the demand for school places across Hampshire to be met. Pupils will benefit from high quality teaching environments in which to learn."
As part of the £907,000 work at Emsworth Prmary School, extra rooms will be constructed, some existing class rooms will be transformed, a new library will be created and there will be landscaping work carried out on an internal courtyard, together with construction of a new playground for reception pupils. This will all help to make a new modern teaching environment for the current and new pupils.
The £601,000 expansion at Petersgate Infant School will also involve the construction of new spaces, the development of a new resource area and provision of a scooter parking facility and new play areas.
Work to expand the schools is expected to start in the coming months and be ready for the arrival of additional pupils in 2014. The school sites will remain in use during the construction period however, there will be no deliveries or contractor and construction vehicle movements at the start and at the end of the school day.
